Elephant sanctuaries on Koh Samui with kids

Every place on this page says on its own site that nobody rides the elephants and there are no shows. You make their food, feed them and walk with them, and at one you bathe them too. Most visits are 3 hours, mornings or afternoons, with hotel pickup, and there are shorter feeding visits. Book on each sanctuary's own site.

Feed, walk and watch

Hands-off: you feed them from a platform or a walkway, walk with them and watch them in the mud. Visitors stay out of the water.

Hands-on: the mud spa and a bath

You get into the mud with the elephants and wash them in a pool. Bring a swimsuit.

Before you go with kids

  • Go in the morning if you can. It is cooler, and with a toddler a short feeding visit is easier than 3 hours in the heat.
  • Closed-toe shoes, a hat and sunscreen. The ground is rough and uneven.
  • Ask about strollers when you book. Samui Elephant Sanctuary keeps them at reception, so a baby carrier is easier.
  • Most tours include hotel pickup. For the short feeding visits you often come by car.
  • Book and pay only on the sanctuary's own site or when you arrive. Samui Elephant Haven warns about people asking for bank transfers in its name.

Why no riding camps

SamuiKids lists only places that say on their own site they offer no riding and no shows, and that we could check are open this year. A place that offers rides, or one we could not check, is not here.
